This painting by David Francis Butterfield is typical of the abstract compositions for which he became well know and quite popular in the 1930s. In this particular composition I see influences of that particular era of Yorkshire artists, not that surprising as Butterfields' known associates were the likes of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Odd you might think then that in his hay-day, Leeds City Art Gallery rejected his work. Possibly the wheels of power just not getting it, or maybe the internal politics of the day. At least now this piece takes its rightful place in the gallery's collection.

Pupils coming for lessons and his older siblings practicing the piano or the violin created a musical atmosphere in which Stanley flourished. Music was always an important part of his life.

William Orpen, the son of a Dublin solicitor was born in Stillorgan, County Dublin in 1878. He studied at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin and the Slade School in London, where his fellow students included Augustus John and Wyndham Lewis. At the Slade he produced two important paintings, The Play Scene from Hamlet and The Mirror. Orpen soon became known for his portraits of public figures and during his career produced over 600 of these pictures.

In Greek mythology, Persephone was the Queen of the underworld, the young maiden, and a daughter of Demeter and Zeus. In the Olympian version, she also becomes the consort of Hades when he becomes the deity that governs the underworld.

The figure of Persephone is very well-known today. Her story has great emotional power: an innocent maiden, a mother's grief over her abduction, and great joy after her daughter is returned. It is also cited frequently as a paradigm of myths that explain natural processes, with the descent and return of the goddess bringing about the change of seasons.


In Greek art, Persephone is invariably portrayed robed. She may be carrying a sheaf of grain and smiling demurely with the "Archaic smile" of the Kore of Antenor.

Francis Towne (c. 1739-1816)

Pen, ink and watercolour.

Towne had a very particular method of producing his watercolours. First he drew the scene on the spot in graphite and ink, often inscribing the exact time and location on the reverse. Secondly, after a period of time, he filled in the scene with a colour or monochrome wash. After that he would go back over the original line drawing, which would have been partially obscured by the wash. Lastly, Towne would title and number the works on the reverse and in some cases paste them onto board and draw wash lines round them.

Although famous and popular in his own time as a portrait painter, Gainsborough produced landscapes throughout his career. However, he sold very few, using them instead to decorate his own home.

Gainsborough liked to experiment and there are accounts of him producing miniature models of landscapes using objects including broccoli, pebbles and glass, which he would then sketch from. There are five drawing and watercolours by Gainsborough in Leeds Art Gallery's collection.

Armitage's art training was undertaken in Paris, where he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in October 1837. He studied under the history painter, Paul Delaroche, who at that time was at the height of his fame. Armitage was one of four students selected to assist Delaroche with the fresco Hemicycle in the amphitheatre of the Palais des Beaux-Arts, when he reputedly modelled for the head of Masaccio.
