Leeds Art Gallery holds and exhibits some of the most outstanding works of British Art outside of London.

The Leeds Art Gallery collection is designated by the government as of national importance. The internationally acclaimed collection of works on paper features Turner, Cotman, Cozens and Girtin. When not on show these can be seen by appointment in the Print Room.

The Gallery has always tried to support the work of living artists. Early gifts included Lady Butler's Scotland Forever. The enduringly popular Leeds artist, Atkinson Grimshaw, is represented by numerous evocative, moonlit scenes. French pictures include celebrated works by Derain and Sisley.

We continue to collect contemporary art. Recent acquisitions include works by Bill Woodrow, Paula Rego, Mark Wallinger, Stephen Willats, Alison Wilding and Bridget Riley. Through the generous support of the Henry Moore Foundation, the Gallery has bought many important sculptures and can boast a modern sculpture collection second only to that of the Tate.

The collection of works on paper at Leeds Art Gallery includes historic watercolours by ever-popular artists such as JMW Turner and John Sell Cotman, prints by Rembrandt, shelter drawings by Henry Moore and work by contemporary artists such as Paula Rego and Rose Garrard.

There is usually a show of watercolours, drawings or prints from the permanent collection on show in the Watercolour Gallery, otherwise works can be viewed by appointment. See the exhibitions listings to find out what is currently on display.
